When the Parliament of the World’s Religions convened in 1993, the introduction to its signature document, Towards a Global Ethic: An Initial Declaration began with a simple sentence, “The world is in agony.” That agony, the document spelled out, was related to the same issues of today– fear, violence, sexism, poverty, economic disparity, hunger, disregard for justice, mistreatment of minorities, despair, and the domination of Nature.

Today, the devastating effects of climate change, the pandemic, political polarization, warfare, the worsening migrant crisis, and the loss of faith in guiding institutions have brought about a kind of existential darkness – a smothering cloud that stifles hope, inspiration, creativity, and belief in the future. There is something contagious about this darkness and it can affect you. But darkness is not the final word.

According to classical spirituality, the “dark night” can serve as a prelude to deeper seeing, as a necessary step on the path of illumination towards Divine union.

Explore ways to journey through the dark night of the soul and move closer to the Light.
